Swamiji’s Role in Saving Five Fishermen from Death Row: A Story of Humanity and Diplomacy

In 2011, a grave diplomatic crisis unfolded between India and Sri Lanka when five Indian fishermen from Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, were apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities on allegations of drug trafficking. The situation escalated when these fishermen were sentenced to death by a Sri Lankan court. The case captured national and international attention, becoming a flashpoint in the already delicate relationship between the two neighboring countries. Amidst the mounting tensions, Swami Sunil Das, the revered spiritual leader and humanitarian, played a pivotal role in resolving the crisis and securing the release of the fishermen. The Critical IssueThe arrest and sentencing of the fishermen created an uproar in India, sparking protests and widespread condemnation. With lives at stake and bilateral relations under strain, the case demanded not just diplomatic intervention but also a compassionate and human-centric approach. Swamiji, known for his tireless efforts in fostering peace and unity, rose to the occasion, acting as a bridge between the two nations.Swamiji’s InterventionSwami Sunil Das was a special invitee at the World Peace Conference organized in Sri Lanka during 2012, 2013, and 2014, coinciding with his annual participation in Buddha Purnima celebrations in Colombo. During one such visit in 2013, Swamiji met the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, a devotee of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. This connection would later prove instrumental in addressing the plight of the fishermen.Deeply moved by the suffering of the fishermen and their families, Swamiji engaged in heartfelt discussions with the President of Sri Lanka, the Chief Justice, and other senior officials. His appeals, steeped in compassion and wisdom, emphasized the shared cultural and spiritual ties between India and Sri Lanka. In a letter to the Chief Justice, Swamiji wrote, “If one of the twin children of a mother gets hurt, the other one will also feel the pain. Since India and Sri Lanka are twins of the same mother, we both will get hurt if one is affected. So kindly resolve the problem peacefully without hurting each other.” This analogy deeply resonated with the Sri Lankan authorities, softening their stance and paving the way for a resolution.Political Players and Diplomatic EffortsSwamiji’s efforts were complemented by diplomatic interventions from the highest levels of both governments. On November 9, 2014, Indian Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi held detailed discussions with the Sri Lankan President, urging a humanitarian resolution to the crisis. The Ministry of External Affairs of India actively negotiated with their Sri Lankan counterparts, leveraging Swamiji’s goodwill and the diplomatic channels simultaneously. The Release and HomecomingOn November 11, 2014, Swamiji received a message from Sri Lankan authorities confirming that the five fishermen would be released. Their return to India on November 21, 2014, was a moment of immense relief and joy. Swamiji was among the dignitaries who warmly welcomed them in Rameswaram, symbolizing the triumph of humanity and diplomacy over conflict.Visits to Sneham AshramFollowing their release, the fishermen and their families visited the Sneham Ashram on November 29, 2014, to express their gratitude. They offered prayers and sought Swamiji’s blessings, thanking him for his unwavering support and intervention. Their visit was a poignant reminder of Swamiji’s profound impact on their lives and the power of love and compassion in resolving even the most challenging situations. In the years that followed, key figures involved in the resolution of the crisis also visited the Sneham Ashram. Sri Lankan dignitaries, including Minister Prabaganesh and Sri Suresh, a member of the Sri Narayana Guru family, paid homage to Swamiji’s efforts and the Ashram’s broader mission of humanitarian service. These visits highlighted the enduring legacy of Swamiji’s work in fostering peace and strengthening bonds between nations.Legacy of CompassionThe release of the Rameswaram fishermen remains a testament to Swamiji’s dedication to serving humanity and his ability to navigate complex situations with grace and wisdom. It underscores the power of spiritual leadership in addressing real-world challenges and the potential of compassion to transcend borders and heal divides. Swamiji’s role in this historic episode will forever be remembered as an extraordinary act of love, courage, and diplomacy.P.S. - A picture below of Sri Lankan and Indian officials visiting Swamiji in Sneham Ashram 👇

Sri Sathya Sai Baba, T.N. Sheshan, and Swami Sunil Das:
Miracles at Muthalamada Sneham Ashram

Muthalamada Sneham Ashram: Miracles Guided by Bhagavan Shri Sathya Sai BabaAs the world celebrates the 99th birth anniversary of Bhagavan Shri Sathya Sai Baba, the Muthalamada Sneham Ashram commemorates this occasion with devotion, service, and gratitude. This year’s celebrations also mark the golden jubilee of Annadanam (food donation)—a sacred tradition of the Ashram, inspired by Baba’s teachings of selfless love and universal service.T.N. Seshan’s Journey to MuthalamadaIn the final month of his tenure as India’s Chief Election Commissioner, T.N. Seshan visited Bhagavan Shri Sathya Sai Baba in Puttaparthi to express his desire to settle there after retirement, seeking proximity to Baba’s physical presence. However, Baba, in His infinite wisdom, lovingly instructed Seshan, saying, “Going to Muthalamada will be enough.”
This divine directive carried profound significance. Baba assured Seshan that His divine presence transcended physical locations and was deeply rooted in the work carried out at Muthalamada Sneham Ashram by Swami Sunil Das. Trusting Baba’s words, Seshan, accompanied by his wife, Jaya, moved to the humble old Ashram at Muthalamada, despite its limited facilities. The couple dedicated themselves to the Ashram’s mission, later transitioning to the newly constructed Ashram, where they played a pivotal role in its growth and service.
A Divine Gift: The Golden PenDuring his tenure as Chief Election Commissioner, T.N. Seshan experienced the magnitude of Baba’s love and trust. Baba presented him with a golden pen and said, “Seshan, you protect India with this pen, and I will protect the creation with My love.” These words became a guiding force in Seshan’s life, reminding him of the divine responsibilities entrusted to him.Baba’s Call Before His MahasamadhiOn March 15, 2011, Swami Sunil Das received a divine message from Baba, urging Seshan and Jaya to visit Puttaparthi immediately. Baba revealed that there would be few opportunities left for physical darshan. Though initially hesitant, as Seshan believed Baba would live until 96 years of age, he trusted Swami Sunil Das, who arranged their journey. On March 18, 2011, Seshan and Jaya received Baba’s darshan at Prasanthi Nilayam. Baba blessed Jaya on the ladies’ side with His Abhaya Hasta (raised hand of blessing) and lovingly inquired about Seshan’s leg pain, reassuring him with the words, “I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS.” These words, spoken shortly before Baba’s Mahasamadhi, were a profound reminder of His eternal guidance and presence. The Miracle of the Birthday SariOn September 13, 2011, T.N. Seshan and Jaya were invited by Swami Sunil Das to inaugurate the Sneham Hospital project alongside Kerala’s Chief Minister, Sri Oommen Chandy. The following day, Jaya’s birthday, Swami Sunil Das received a divine message from Baba instructing him to gift her a Kerala silk sari. Despite the late hour and closed shops, devotees arrived unexpectedly with a sari that perfectly matched Baba’s vision. However, the blouse was unstitched, leaving Jaya disappointed. Swami Sunil Das, following Baba’s guidance, asked the couple to chant the Shri Gayatri nine times while holding the sari. Miraculously, when they unfolded it, they found a perfectly stitched blouse tailored to Jaya’s exact measurements. This incredible event reaffirmed Baba’s omnipresence and His loving care for His devotees.Baba’s Eternal Presence at Sneham AshramFrom gifting the golden pen to reassuring Seshan of His presence at Muthalamada, Baba’s divine love has always been evident at the Sneham Ashram. In another instance, months after Baba’s Mahasamadhi, Seshan suffered severe leg pain, leaving Jaya in tears over Baba’s physical absence. Swami Sunil Das prayed intensely, and soon a lump of vibhuti manifested in their home, affirming Baba’s continued presence and protection.Through countless miracles and acts of divine guidance, Baba has shown that His physical departure was not an end but a transformation. Muthalamada Sneham Ashram continues to be a sacred space where Baba’s mission of love, healing, and service thrives under the guidance of Swami Sunil Das.A Message for the WorldBaba’s reassurance to T.N. Seshan that “going to Muthalamada will be enough” highlights the sanctity of Sneham Ashram, where His divine presence is felt in every act of service. Whether through miraculous healings, guidance to devotees, or the enduring legacy of Annadanam, the Ashram stands as a testament to Baba’s omnipresence and His eternal mission of spreading love and compassion.LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU

Sneham Trust's New Free Medical Hospital Project:
Dharma in Action

India, with over 1.4 billion people—nearly one-sixth of the global population—faces significant challenges due to underdevelopment. Among the most pressing issues are the lack of accessible healthcare, education, and economic opportunities, which are essential pillars for progress. In response to these challenges, Muthalamada Sneham Charitable Trust is spearheading the construction of a free medical hospital in a region that faces acute social and economic hardships. This initiative aims not only to provide life-saving healthcare to underserved populations but also to foster long-term development in the area. The hospital will integrate advanced allopathic treatments with complementary systems like Ayurveda, homeopathy, naturopathy, and yoga, creating a holistic healthcare model. Moreover, the hospital is envisioned as a hub for community growth—creating jobs, establishing nursing colleges, and promoting education on health, nutrition, and best practices. By addressing healthcare and related social determinants, we aim to uplift the region, attract businesses, and cultivate a thriving ecosystem of service and development. This ambitious project has been officially endorsed and approved by the Government of India, with key support from Hon. Nirmala Sitharaman (Finance Minister) and Somanathan (Finance Secretary). The approval was formalized with the presentation of the necessary clearances, including tax exemptions under Section 80G for domestic donors and FCRA approval for foreign contributions.Currently, the area lacks free healthcare services, which, combined with limited educational and economic opportunities, has hindered the growth and well-being of its people. This hospital will be a beacon of hope, addressing critical gaps and fostering a brighter future. The Trust is raising funds and contributions to directly support this transformative initiative, helping to construct and sustain a facility that serves those in need. Engaging in this mission is not merely an act of charity—it is Dharma in action, uniting organizations, contributors, and communities in the shared goal of bettering lives. For those who wish to participate in this noble endeavor, please find the bank details below to bring healthcare, education, and development to a region in need and create a legacy of compassion and service.
